Ray and Ann Rust, 60th Anniversary Party |
Ray Dean Rust was born in Kansas in March 1941 to Raymond Enos and Elma Loie Brasier Rust. His father was switch engineer for the Santa Fe railroad. Ray's older sister was Marjorie Jean (Phipps). Ray married Ann Marie Bruning in June of 1963 in White Cloud, Kansas. Ann was a graduate of Robinson Rural High School and Kansas State Teachers College in Emporia, KS. She taught school in Kansas. Ray was a 1959 graduate of Emporia High School and completed his physics degree at Emporia State College in 1963. He studied physics at the University of Illinois at Urbana before attending the University of Texas. His dissertation in 1970 was entitled, "Linear Resistive Loading Studies Near the Lower Hybrid Resonance in Deuterium and Hydrogen Plasmas." Ray and Ann have two daughters, Rhonda and Rachel. Following his PhD, Ray was employed by Bell Telephone Laboratories, Whippany, NJ and Richmond, VA, from 1970 to 1994. He had four patents in plasma physics while employed by Bell Laboratories. Ray received the Distinguished Technical Staff Member Award for Sustained Achievement on July 6, 1984. Ray’s work in the area of electroless copper deposition and drill smear removal in plated-through-hole and torque motor design for electroplating equipment were significant technical achievements. Ray pioneered the use of plasma processing to remove organic residues from printed wiring boards for which he earned recognition not only in AT&T, but also throughout the printed circuit industry.
In 1995 Ray received the Distinguished Alumni Award by the Emporia State University Alumni Association in recognition of his outstanding professional achievements as a graduate of Emporia State University.
After retiring from Bell Telephone Laboratories, Ray headed a consortium of five major companies concerning the use of multilayer boards.
Ray was an active member of the United Methodist Church wherever he resided. Ray and his wife, Ann, have taught all levels of Sunday School. After completing his technical work, Ray followed his wife’s lead and became a Healing Touch Certified Practitioner and had a private practice for many years. They started a Healing Ministry for Mt. Pisgah UMC. Individuals were trained in Healing Touch by Ann, a Healing Touch Certified Instructor. The Healing Ministry was held once a month and was open to the church and community free of charge. Ray and Ann with other trained volunteers staffed the event each month.
At Mt. Pisgah UMC in Midlothian, VA, they co-chaired a new Landscaping Committee and paid for the expenses by having an Annual Plant Sale. Each year a section was implemented. The last section implemented was a lovely Columbarium for the church.
Ray and Ann moved to Raleigh, NC to be close to one of their daughters.
